Include letter, 1792 October 7, from Jefferson, Philadelphia, Pa., to Henry Remsen concerning official letters forwarded to William Carmichael and William Short re: their negotiations on behalf of the United States in Amsterdam and expressing his fears that the letters may have been lost at sea. Also include letter, 1790 March 11, Alexandria, Va., to Alexander Donald, Richmond, Va., instructing Donald about the forwarding of some plants for the Comtesse de Tesse to either La Motte at Havre or Coffin at Dunkirk, and the keeping of the plants until a vessel may be found.

William Short was born in Surry County, Virginia, in 1759, the son of William Short and Elizabeth (Skipwith) Short. He graduated in 1779 from the College of William and Mary where he had been one of the founders of Phi Beta Kappa.
